This simplified procedure will demonstrate how to set up a Nubix 4BC DVR in an example network installation so that an external PC (a remote computer) can view the cameras and make local video copies. Although different Nubix models use different software versions, the concept is the same. First you need to align all of your IP addresses so a video stream can reach the internet, then you need to set up a remote computer to access that video stream.

(If you are using a Nubix 4BC, then go to the bottom of this page to download the Java software and Nubix4BC Client software. If you are NOT using a Nubix 4BC, then DO NOT download this software - it won't work for your DVR.)

 

 
     

 

Many different network configurations are possible. In this example we will take a look at what you need to do if you have a DVR, a firewall, and a modem at your facility and you want to connect to it using your home PC, which is on a dial-up connection.

 

First, set up your DVR. Use the usual method and go to MENU, ADVANCE, and NETWORK. You will see at the top either STATIC or DHCP. For this demonstration make sure it is set to STATIC.

 
 
  1. Make sure IP is set to the IP address of the DVR itself. Our IP address is 192.168.001.010. The DVR will have a default IP address.
   
 

NOTE: If you have more than one DVR attached to your network you will want to set the type of connection to DHCP so the DVR can set itself to a unique IP address by querying IP addresses of other DVRs on the connection and acquiring a free IP. Use the “+” and “-“ buttons to change between STATIC and DHCP, in necessary.

   
 
  1. Set the GATEWAY IP address to the IP address of your router. You may need to consult your router software or a network administrator to find this IP address.
  2. Allow the NETMASK setting to stay at 255.255.255.000 unless you are having trouble. Selecting a netmask setting other than the default may require consulting with a network administrator.
  3. Set PORT to 8080. This is a default hardware access port.
  4. At the router, make sure to set the PORT FORWARDING ADDRESS of you DVR (in this case the port is 192.168.001.010).
   
 

NOTE: If your network has a server you will need to access the server to set up the appropriate IP address and other properties where applicable. See your network administrator.

   
 

At this point the DVR is set up to transmit information through the router to the internet when port 8080 is accessed at the IP address of your facility. Next, you must set up your remote computer to handle the information that is being transmitted.

   
 
  1. Go to www.cctvsupportsite.com
  2. Under MANUALS AND SOFTWARE, click DVRs.
  3. Click NUBIX 4BC.
  4. Click SOFTWARE.
  5. Download and install the JAVA SOFTWARE and the NUBIX 4BC CLIENT SETUP.
  6. The client software you downloaded and set up in step 5 is called VIDEO SERVER E (VSE) throughout the rest of this procedure. The JAVA software is used by VSE and you don’t need to concern yourself with it anymore – just make sure you installed it or VIDEO SERVER E won’t work.
  7. Start VSE.
  8. When you see the opening screen, type your USERNAME, PASSWORD, IP address of the network you are accessing, and PORT. In our example we use ADMIN, ADMIN, 172.23.10.104, and 8080. Then click the Green Down Arrow.
   
 

You should see streaming video from the DVR. You can change settings, search records, and you can RECORD video. Stored video is placed by default on your desktop, but this can be changed if you like. IF YOU DON'T SEE VIDEO: Contact a network consultant. The most common error is selection of IP addresses, which are essential in this process.

 

 

Playing & Transporting Recorded Video Files

   
 

Video files created by VSE are playable by the VSE video player, aptly named VideoPlayer.exe, which was installed in the same directory you selected when you installed the VSE software (probably called "Video Server E" if you used the default selections). If you plan to copy the video file (which has the extension .vse) to a CD and take it to another computer to play it remember to copy the videoplayer.exe file and possibly the install file (Videoplayer_setup.exe) so you can watch the video on the other computer.

 

   
 

Notes about Video Server E Software

   
 

VSE and similar software have common features that let you access the DVR as if you were using the menu commands on the front of the unit. Since firmware upgrades and models change frequently, it would be of little use show any screens or graphics in this procedure. The software is primarily designed to allow you to make backup copies on your local hard disk drive and monitor your surveillance installation from a remote location so complex video manipulation or archiving/conversion controls are not provided. You should be able to adequately familiarize yourself with the on-screen controls since they mimic the DVR controls. If you are having a problem, contact the manufacturer of the brand/model DVR you are using.
